To the Teachers, Students, and Alumni of Princeton in Beijing:
虽然我们的年龄,工作,和所在的地方各自不同,但我们所共有的是在北京师范大学曾经共度的暑期--- 炎热,忙碌,为了学好中文和教好中文所付出的心血和努力。为一批又一批优秀的外国大学生、研究生营造了一个只许说中文的语言乌托邦。每年暑期,在这个乌托邦里有说不完的欢乐和兴奋,也有道不尽的心酸和沮丧。但愿如今回首,所有的苦难艰辛都成了美好的回忆了。
While our ages, careers, and locations may be different, what we all have in common is a summer spent together at Beijing Normal University – during those hot and engaging days, together we strived to learn and teach Chinese well. For cohort after cohort of outstanding international undergraduate and graduate students, a Chinese-speaking utopia was created. Every summer, this utopia held endless joy and excitement, along with no shortage of frustration and melancholy. Yet hopefully, over time, the hardships have turned into fond memories. Summers at Beijing Normal University will forever hold our achievements, our dreams, and our love!
--- Professor Emeritus Chih-ping Chou
Princeton in Beijing Co-Founder
Princeton in Beijing was established at Beijing Normal University in 1993, and we will commemorate 30 years of collaboration with our beloved host university this summer with a celebration event planned for Sunday, July 14 on the campus of Beijing Normal University.
To help celebrate the occasion, we are hoping to collect photos, and any other memento you’d be willing to share (journal entries, souvenirs, homework assignments, etc.), from your summer in Beijing in the Princeton in Beijing program (electronic copies). Better yet, if you could record a short video (one or two minutes in length) recounting a lasting memory or impression of your Princeton in Beijing experience at Beijing Normal University, we would love to incorporate it into a longer-form video we plan to produce.

If you will be in China in mid-July this summer and would like to join the festivities at Beijing Normal University, we warmly welcome you to RSVP. We would love to see you back on campus of BNU This summer!
A Collection of Reflections
As part of this commemoration, and in collaboration with BNU’s School of International Chinese Language Education, PiB plans to publish a collection of reflective essays.
To those who attended the program in Beijing during its fledgling years, please share your invaluable, pioneering experiences. If you have spent one or more sweltering summers on the campus of Beijing Normal University, engaging with the Chinese language like never before, we welcome your recollections and reflections. Capture and share those memorable and touching moments, the joy and excitement, the grit and determination, as well as the frustration and melancholy, that filled those eight weeks we spent together in a Chinese-speaking utopia.
Say all that you would like to say, in any form and manner. Essays can be in Chinese or English, and there are no restrictions to writing style. We hope that submissions can be around 2,000 words in length, and not exceeding 2,500 words. Completed works can be shared here: https://www.dropbox.com/request/6kyLjGZBcS8kNJsdZHd1. The deadline for submission is June 30th, 2024.
Before its formal publication, your essays will be compiled along with those from former instructors into a booklet, which will be shared at the 30th-anniversary event on July 14th, 2024, on the BNU campus.
With endless gratitude and fond nostalgia for our time in Beijing, we eagerly await your submissions!
